Scott Joplin
Scot Joplin was an African-American pianist. He was known as the king of Ragtime - but what exactly is Ragtime? Well, it's a type of music that like it's name suggests has a ragged rhythm. It was most popular between 1895 - 1919. Like Scott Joplin,it's roots were in African-American culture in the Southern US.
Interestingly, Joplin first got in touch with a piano at a house where his mother worked as a made to a white family. A piano teacher noticed Joplin's talent and helped him. When Joplin grew older he moved from his birth town and became a piano teacher himself.
He started publishing his music in 1895 and became famous by 1899. He unfortunately became ill with syphilis and passed away.After his death his music became even more popular globally. His most well known piece is The Entertainer. He even wrote 2 operas!
